Gond Tribe Of India: One of the biggest tribal communities in India is the Gonds. The Gond population is dispersed over several Indian states, including Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.

Gond Tribe in India

- As of the 2001 Census, there were almost 11 million Gonds living in the country. 5.01 million people were Gonds according to the 1971 Census.
- The Hill Maria, Bisonhorn Maria, and Muria are the three principal Gond tribes in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar area.
- The Gond tribe’s Hill Maria are the most solitary members; they inhabit the rocky Abujhmar Hills.
- The Bisonhorn Maria tribes live in and around Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur. They can also be found in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district.
- These tribes speak a dialect known as Dandami Maria.
- The headpiece that the males wore while dancing gave rise to the tribe’s moniker, the Bisonhorn Maria Gonds.

Gond Tribe of India– History
- Chanda was one of the early Gond kingdoms, established around the year 1200.
- The Kingdom of Chanda implemented the first established income system among the Gond kingdoms.
- The Kingdom of Chanda created a vast irrigation system.
- Additionally, the state of Chanda was the first Gond state to begin constructing forts, which subsequently became more complex.
- In the fourteenth century, Jaduri overthrew the previous Kalachuri kings and established the Kingdom of Garha.
- The most well-known warrior-queen of Garha-Mandla is Rani Durgavati.
- Rani Durgavati battled against Akbar till her death in 1564.
- After Rani Durgavati, the warrior queen, passed away, her son Bir Narayan came to govern the realm. Even after he passed away, Bir Narayan battled the Mughals.
- The Gond rajas were later reinstated and placed under the Mughals’ dominion after the Gond kingdoms were briefly subjugated by them.
- Marathas ruled the lands of Gond rajas until the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
- Following the battle, the British seized control of the Gond Zamindaris and assumed revenue collecting duties.
- The Gonds were marginalized by British colonial forest management methods.
- The Gonds were reliant on the woods for their subsistence, and the British government’s discriminatory forest laws deprived them of their rights.
- This resulted in the military rebellion known as the Bastar Rebellion against the British in 1910.
