Media and Role in Democracy

There is a reason why obtaining knowledge is crucial. First, it makes it possible for citizens to be knowledgeable and responsible rather than naive about the government and media. When creating media initiatives that support democracy, some crucial questions to keep in mind are:

  1. “Having a powerful position”
  2. Who can access the means of communication?” and
  3. To whom it  is communicated?”

The responses to each of these queries will influence the media industry. For example, the government may have more direct or indirect influence over the media in certain nations, setting the parameters for public discourse. To sum up, the media industry needs the following things in order to be strengthened:

Factors Affecting Media and Role in Democracy

  1. Individual people(journalists, lawyers, etc.)
  2. Subject senders (wire services, think tanks, NGOs)
  3. Training institutes, universities.
  4. Independent companies.
  5. Professional companies (journalism etc.)
  6. Technology.

The government and the media don’t trust each other. They continue the blame game by not believing either the public or the government, since the public may believe that misleading information has been spread by the media, and the government may believe that misleading information is being shown by the media. The state has moved in two directions.

  • First, by introducing foreign investment in digital news and also making government permission mandatory.
  • Second,  a new set of guidelines, are introduced as the Information Technology Rules, 2021, which automatically gives the government the right to order the taking down of content it finds incorrect.
