Rock paintings of the Mesolithic period in India represent not only the cultural life of that period but also the sophisticated aesthetic sense comparable to the modern painting. Critically evaluate this comment. (UPSC-2015)

The time when man lived as a hunter-gatherer is known as the Mesolithic period. Stone tools helped him to live. However, rare cave drawings from that era show that man was already expressing his knowledge of what was happening around him.

Mesolithic paintings may be found in a number of locations connected to different eras, including Sambhalpur, Orissa, and the Suhagighat caves in Mirzapur, Sundergarh, and Madhya Pradesh’s Bhimbetka. Additionally, these paintings may be found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Numerous scenarios, such as hunting, group dances, music, tools, a mother with her children, pregnant ladies, people carrying dead animals, etc., are shown in these paintings.

History of the World Before 18th Century

These artworks are unique in this sense. The fact that these cave paintings show males in a linear shape is a fascinating feature. Men were most likely connected to hunting activities because of this. Animals had to be killed and harmed during the hunt. There is a certain emotional strain produced by these kinds of activities. For this reason, these scenes were shown in a symbolic manner. The feelings of prehistoric man were therefore conveyed via the paintings of the Mesolithic Period. It appears as though the photos are attempting to communicate without the script.

What is Constitutionalism And Consitutional Morality

In the context of symbolism and diversity, this art painting seems to be somewhere close to the modern painting, although there is a difference in the form of the two. Mesolithic painting is an expression of simple human emotions. Primitive people were trying to understand their surroundings and they expressed this understanding in the form of a painting. On the other hand, modern life is much more complexity than life of Stone Age. The perception of modern humans is also multi-dimensional. Therefore, modern life with its full complexity is expressed in modern painting.
